List55

What is List55?

List55 is a very simple web app that allows you to quickly transcribe audio into lists. I use it for a workout log, but you can use it for any kind of list or just for general transcriptions.

How is this better than X?

There are many tools that transcribe audio, including the Apple keyboard and ChatGPT.

But their accuracy can be low, and they do not create lists automatically. They also force you to press more buttons and navigate between apps.

My aim with List55 is to have a streamlined experience:

1. Tap List55 on the home screen.
2. Speak.
3. Copy a list without errors.

List55 currently uses Microsoft AI Transcription, which has one of the lowest transcription error rates and one of the fastest processing speeds.

The best way to use List55 is to open it in Safari, go to the Page Menu, set Mic to Always Allow, then press the three dots menu -> Share -> Add to Home Screen.

This adds the List55 icon to your iPhone Home Screen, making it very fast to transcribe a list onto your clipboard, ready to paste into any app.

Instant record URLs

The URL parameters documented below can be used to start a recording immediately. They let you launch List55 from different launchers to streamline your workflow without pressing the record button.

To start a normal List55 recording without redirecting, use:

For example, you can add a macOS Raycast Quicklink to quickly query an LLM or create a list or transcription.

On iPhone, you can use Shortcuts with the flyover Safari web view to instantly query an LLM or create a list. You can add the Shortcut to your Home Screen, or open List55 in Safari and add the website to your Home Screen.

Use convert_into_list=1 with instant_record_on_open to format the transcript as a list. It defaults to 1; set convert_into_list=0 to keep the transcript as plain text.

Instant ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude redirect

Use these to instantly transcribe and redirect to the web versions of your ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude chat:

Why would you use List55 for redirecting to an LLM?

• The much more accurate MAI transcription model means fewer mistakes, especially for technical questions and terms.
• Edit the text before it is given to the LLM.
• Open the same question in multiple LLMs.
• Faster and more streamlined voice prompts, with fewer buttons to press. It instantly activates the mic and redirects.

Process media from a URL

Add process_media_from_url={url} to a List55 URL to immediately download and process a direct, public audio or video file. URL-encode the media URL, for example:

Tips

• You can process many audio files at once. You can also scan directories for audio files recursively. Drag and drop files or folders, or paste them into the textarea.

Where is my data stored?

Audio and text are present on the server only while a request is in flight. We use cloud-based LLM providers for transcription and list processing, but neither List55 nor the LLM providers store that content after the transcription is complete.

For media downloaded from a URL, List55 stores the source URL, final redirected URL, SHA-256 content hash, downloaded byte size, result, and IP address in the same SQL usage-statistics table used for other requests. The media content itself is not stored in that table.

That said, the text is stored locally in your web browser using JavaScript localStorage. It will be cleared along with browsing data and cookies, so do not rely on it.
